As part of the series of events celebrating the International Women’s Day 2017, the Independent Office of Evaluation of IFAD organized a learning event on the recently completed evaluation synthesis titled “What works for gender equality and women’s empowerment – a review of practices and results”.

The objectives of this learning event were to contribute to the clarification of the gender-transformative concept, share insights, lessons and good practices, and discuss the recommended follow up at IFAD.

The workshop raised awareness on gender-transformative practices. It introduced the conceptual framework used to identify practices and results for transformative changes presenting practical examples. The case studies included in the synthesis report may be used for wider learning and dissemination.

The workshop was attended by over 60 colleagues, including five IFAD country offices who connected via video conference; the Head of the Evaluation Office of World Food Programme; and representatives from CGIAR and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.  The Hon. Minister of Social Affairs in Kassala, Republic of Sudan, Ms. Aisha Oshiek, connected by telephone and spoke about her experiences in an IFAD-supported project in Sudan. Béatrice Ntahe, who was responsible for the local initiatives component in an IFAD-supported project in Burundi, shared her experiences in this regard.

This is the second event conducted as part of this evaluation synthesis. A workshop on the theory of change on gender was organized in cooperation with the Programme Management Department in September 2016. See this workshop's report here.
