Pathways for transformation change indispensable for climate action to take place - IOE
Rome, 1 February 2022 – Major transformational changes will be necessary in our economies and societies to shift the world from the brink of a climate catastrophe. These changes will need to be systemic, comprehensive and implemented in record time. They will also have and include perspectives such as climate justice, just transition, and the full range of Sustainable Development Goals. High-level representatives from the worlds of policy action, research and evaluation underscored this call for action during the second climate change-focused dialogue in the three-part series organized by Wilton Park, which took place on 1 February 2022.
Indran A. Naidoo and Fabrizio Felloni, respectively Director and Deputy Director of the Independent Office of Evaluation (IOE) of IFAD, joined over fifty participants to discuss the theme ‘making transformational change for climate action post COP26 – how?’. The participant line-up also featured Rob D. van den Berg, member of IOE’s Evaluation Advisory Panel, and Jo Puri, Associate Vice President of IFAD’s Strategy and Knowledge Department.
Convened two months after COP26, the dialogue session looked at some of the evidence and research that is building-up about how transformational climate action can take place. By discussing the existing evidence, participants identified ways to break down the many practical, political and structural barriers that may lead to improved collaboration and aligned networks among policy, research and evaluation.
Issues discussed and questions addressed included what transformational climate action needs to look like after COP26, both in terms of the outcomes of COP26 and the wider ambition to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees; what progress is really being made to generate the transformational change needed; how to create change across the many, often siloed, sectoral approaches, pilots and initiatives; and how collective action can take place for adaptive, anticipatory and robust climate action.
Wilton Park is an Executive Agency of the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and is considered one of the world’s leading institutions for in-depth discussion of international policy issues and challenges. To hold this event, Wilton Park partnered with IFAD, the International Development Evaluation Association (IDEAS), Climate Investment Funds, Global Environment Facility, Green Climate Fund, University of Sussex, Institute of Development Studies, United Nations Development Programme Independent Evaluation Office, and the International Evaluation Academy.
The first discussion in the Wilton Park series took place in September 2021, under the theme ‘Pathways towards transformational climate action: connecting the worlds of research, evaluation and policy for action’.
