IOE endorses call to stop actions and policies that hurt the planet - IOE
Rome, 31 October 2022 – The Independent Office of Evaluation of IFAD (IOE) supports the call for societies, governments, the private sector and all concerned citizens to stop actions and policies that hurt the planet and our peoples, and remove barriers to change. This, as part of its endorsement to the high-level note titled ‘Promoting transformational change for a sustainable future 5 calls for action’. The document was developed from a series of meetings, throughout 2021 and 2022, on transformational change for a sustainable future organised by Wilton Park.
Set against the prestigious backdrop of Wilton Park House, the in-person ‘by invitation only’ series of conferences, which resulted in the high-level note, discussed transformational change that focuses on climate change and the environment/development nexus. A host of high-level evaluation experts flew-in to bring concrete, evidence-based guidance on designing, supporting and implementing transformational change for a sustainable future. Dr. Indran A. Naidoo, IOE Director, actively contributed to the discussions during the conference series.
In order to stop actions and policies that hurt the planet, the high-level note calls upon governments to start taxing both industries and consumers who must pay the costs for rectifying and remediating practices that are destroying our future. The document also underscores the need to remove barriers for introducing new energy technologies. Barriers include disinformation and targeted campaigns by companies and groups that invest in and are supportive of unsustainable and extractive use of natural resources.
The IOE-endorsed note includes a total of five calls to action. In addition to the aforementioned first call, the second call pinpoints the need for societal partners to create a shared and inclusive vision of a transformed world. The third call notes the need for increased support for transformational change initiatives, with rich countries bearing a larger share of the costs of responding to the crisis. The fourth call underscores the need to guarantee open access and transfer technologies that help humanity to survive and adapt to climate change. The fifth call highlights the need to create a global knowledge centre for policies, programmes and interventions aimed at transformational change, including practical guidance on how to transform production and consumption and achieve sustainability.
The Wilton Park ‘transformational change for a sustainable future’ series was held in association with the International Development Evaluation Association (IDEAS), IEO, Climate Investment Funds, Global Environment Facility Independent Evaluation Office, Green Climate Fund, the German Institute for Development Evaluation, the United Kingdom’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Independent Evaluation Office of the United Nations Development Programme, the University of Sussex, and the Institute of Development Studies and the International Evaluation Academy.
