Tihama Development Project III (Wadi Mawr)
Tihama Development Project III (Wadi Mawr)
The project was the first of IFAD’s operations in Yemen. Centred in Wadi Mawr on the Tihama coastal plain, it provided the infrastructure necessary to improve irrigation in the area by regulating the spate water flows of Wadi Mahr to ensure even distribution over cultivable land. Through improved irrigation facilities, it was possible to develop a total of 22,000 ha of land. A 148 km gravel feeder road was built, and 71 villages were provided with a domestic water supply. The project included construction of extension centres, offices, staff residences and a research farm at Surdud.

Although this description might call to mind doctors, nurses or specialised health workers, it also includes another category of care provider that must not be overlooked – mother counsellors.
