Chitral Area Development Project
Chitral district is a remote mountainous area in the north-western corner of Pakistan. It is inhabited by the Khow people and other smaller indigenous groups. Most people work some land, but holdings are generally very small, yields are low and poverty is severe. The main objective of the project was to increase food production for farmers and generally improve rural poor people’s quality of life. Specifically, the project worked to:
- increase productivity of the limited natural resource base
- rehabilitate irrigation schemes
- initiate more diversified agricultural production
- improve delivery of services
The project helped raise agricultural productivity thanks to increased and more efficient irrigation, and improved seeds, fertilizer and technical knowledge.
